Synopsis

When Jake Portman was growing up in Florida, his grandfather, Abe Portman, told him fantastical stories, and showed him pictures, about his time at a childen's home. These stories and pictures consisted of an island that was always sunny, a lady who could turn into a bird, and children who have special powers. Jake believed these stories up until the outside world shunned the stories and claiming the pictures were fakes.
One day, Jake recieves a call from his grandfather saying that he tried to keep him safe, but they found him. Jake drives over to his house to find his grandfather dying in the woods behind his house without his eyes. His last words are to find the postcard and to find her. Jake then turns to see a roughly humanoid figure that looks like the stuff found in nightmares.
Jake finds the postcard and follows it to a little island in the middle of nowhere. There he finds the children's home, but it was hit by a bomb during WWII. He then sees Emma, a girl who is lighter than air, and recognizes her from her grandfather's story. He follows her into a cave in a rock wall, and on the other side, he comes out into a day different than the one he left and a time when the house was a house with the children his grandfather described in his stories. He meets Miss Peregrine, the lady who could turn into a bird, and all of the children who are like he always dreamed they would be.
In this place, he is happy and loved, but he can not leave the world he knows to stay with Miss Peregrine and her perculiar children. After his third day goinig back and forth between his world and Miss Peregrin's, Miss Peregrine is captured by the henchmen of the creatures that killed Abe, and Jake and the children have to risk everything to save Miss Peregrine before she dies.

Review

Tim Burton did an amazing job turning this great book into a fabulous movie. Though he did not keep it completely inline with the book, I feel his changes help to make the movie more dramatic, and in some cases, rather funny (in a dark, Tim Burton kind of way). He switched up the perculiarities of some of the character, leaving those who have read the book rather confused, but I feel that the changes fit better with the movie's storyline and made better sense for the movie's characters.I really enjoyed this movie and would recommend it to anyone who likes Tim Burton films, and everything he brings to them, whether they have read the book or not.
